Investigation on Stress Wave Propagation and Distance Attenuation Characteristics in Reinforced Concrete Structures Subjected to Projectile Impact

Abstract

The current regulatory requirements established in 2013 introduced new regulations addressing projectile impacts, including tornado-borne missiles and aircraft impacts, on nuclear facilities. Accordingly, the development of reliable assessment methods for projectile impact has become an important issue. However, knowledge regarding the effects of stress waves propagating through reinforced concrete (RC) buildings on equipment installed inside the buildings remains limited. In this study, the ASI-Gauss method is applied to evaluate the response distribution within an RC building subjected to impact loading. The effects of structural discontinuities on stress-wave propagation and response attenuation are investigated. The results demonstrate that structural discontinuities significantly reduce stress-wave propagation within the RC building.
